Putnam County is located
in the Upper Cumberland region of Tennessee. Putnam County
is just 90 miles from Nashville, 110 miles from Chattanooga,
and 100 miles from Knoxville. The population of Putnam County
is about 70,000. Putnam County is located in a very scenic
area, one the most beautiful in the country. With low crime,
low property taxes, and a county full of friendly caring
people; it is what makes Putnam County one of the best places
in the country to live and raise a family.
Putnam County was created in 1854 from Fentress, Jackson, Smith White
and Overton counties; named in honor of Israel Putnam ( 1718-1790), French
and Indian War soldier and commander at the Revolutionary War battles of Bunker
Hill and Long Island.
